Labral tears
The Basics
The labrum is a thick piece of tissue that surrounds the socket of the hip joint. The labrum provides stability and cushioning of the hip joint. A labral injury in the hip is damage to the cartilage that aligns the hip socket.
Labral injuries in the hip occur due to structural abnormalities, repetitive movement, and injury. Activities that put increased pressure on the hip could damage the joint and subsequent labrum that surrounds the hip.

Signs and symptoms
Symptoms of a labral injury include hip pain, clicking or catching sensations, limited range of motion, instability, and stiffness. Patients may also experience a sudden/sharp pain during certain movements, constant dull pain, and pain that radiates into the groin or lower back.
Diagnosis and Treatment Options
Diagnosis can be made by obtaining a thorough physical examination by your provider. Imaging studies such as Xrays and MRIs are often used to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment for injuries to the cuff includes physical therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, injections, and potential hip arthroscopy surgery if other treatments fail.
