Strains and Sprains
The Basics
An ankle strain is caused by overstretching, overuse, or sudden movement that happens in the muscle or tendons. An ankle sprain happens in the ligament caused by twisting, rolling, or sports injury.
Signs and symptoms
Some symptoms of ankle sprains or strains include pain around the ankle, swelling, stiffness, a limited range of motion, muscle tightness, and weakness.

Treatment
Basic treatment includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the ankle. Depending on the severity, your provider may recommend for further imaging, injections, and surgery.
