General Issues

The glenohumeral joint, commonly known as the shoulder joint, is a complex joint which is provides a lot of the motion necessary for most everyday tasks.  Even small issues can cause noticeable symptoms including pain and decreased motion.  There is a lot of overlap with the cervical spine (neck) which means Dr. Urband will spend time during your visit making sure the correct issue is being addressed.

Shoulder Arthritis

The most common types of arthritis that affect the shoulder are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In osteoarthritis, articular cartilage breaks down, causing bones to rub together, leading to both pain and stiffness in the joint. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system targets joint linings, leading to similar symptoms as osteoarthritis as bones rub together. Potential treatments for these types of arthritis range from rest, medications, modified physical activity, and physical therapy to  surgery.
