Shoulder

General Issues

The glenohumeral joint, commonly known as the shoulder joint, is a complex joint which provides a lot of the motion necessary for everyday tasks.  Even small issues can cause noticeable symptoms including pain and decreased motion.  There is a lot of overlap with the cervical spine (neck) which means Dr. Urband will spend time during your visit making sure the correct issue is being addressed.

Instability

Shoulder instability can range from small micromotions to dislocations. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, chronic issues, and genetic issues like tissue laxity and hypermobility. Dr. Urband will consider all of these factors in his treatment.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder that are needed for stability and strength during motions. Issues can arise anywhere from the neve connection and signal to the muscle to the insertion of the tendon to bone. So, "rotator cuff injury" is inclusive of a wide variety of issues

Frozen Shoulder

In a frozen shoulder, the connective tissue around the shoulder becomes thicker and inflamed, leading to pain, stiffness, and a limited range of motion. It can be caused by inactivity after surgery, so maintaining range of motion after surgery can prevent this! Frozen shoulder is primarily treated nonsurgically, but surgery can be done if other options are unsuccessful.

Shoulder Arthritis

The most common types of arthritis that affect the shoulder are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In osteoarthritis, articular cartilage breaks down, causing bones to rub together, leading to both pain and stiffness in the joint. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system targets joint linings, leading to similar symptoms as osteoarthritis as bones rub together. Potential treatments for these types of arthritis range from rest, medications, modified physical activity, and physical therapy to  surgery.

Inflammation

There are many structures in the shoulder that can become inflamed, leading to a variety of issues, including subacromial impingement, bursitis, tendonitis, bone spurs, and bone bruises.
